  1. Not yet under control, no indication yet of what, if any, damage is occurring.

First responders and on-site fire teams train for this often, fingers crossed for them

edit: video shows the big oil refinery towers surrounded by flames.

  2. I can’t decide if the timing for this is remarkable or unfortunate. Leaning towards somewhere in the middle.

  3. With both Iran and US blockading the Persian Gulf, it was only a matter of time before things escalated to Geelong.

Anyone get a look at whether it was a Shaheed drone or a Tomahawk cruise missile?

    “VICTORIA

    GEELONG

    REFINERY FIRE

    ============

There is currently an emergency situation happening down in Corio with what appears to be a fuel refinery on fire at the Viva Energy plant – on refinery rd, Corio. At 11:51pm there are currently 9 vehicles on site.”

I’m gonna go throw fuel onto the speculation train. If I recall correctly, this refinery was shut down quite a while ago, and only operated for natural gas, the fuel refinery part was turned off.

A few weeks ago I think work to reactivate the fuel refinery part, was kicked off. It’s very possible that the old gal wasn’t maintained well enough while it was turned off… and turning it back on was problematic..

Or maybe it was intentional as others are suggesting.

Good timing! Coincidence or just a massive fuck up. Either way, great we have redundancy. Oh wait…

Far out I can’t get over how we can now get news before the main media channels do.Ā

might be a silly question, is it too soon to ask if we need to do anything just incase of a emergency. sound like a woos. but idk just want to calm the anxiety down

Is anyone else in the area having headaches? Might be overthinking but the stuff in the air’s probably no good for anyone. Keep your doors and windows closed people in the area! Stay safe.

“It supplies over 50% of Victoria’s fuel and 10% of Australia’s fuel, processing $\sim$120,000 barrels per day into petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and bitumen”

    From google AI.

That’s probably not a good thing right about now..

    This looks massive.

My dad worked his whole life as a safety engineer at a much bigger refinery (the Altona one). Even a small fire or issue was bad and would put the plant out of action or on reduced production for ages… This thing looks massive. Knowing how seriously these places take safety and do everything they can to avoid accidents, I’ve got no idea how a normal mistake or accident could result in something on this scale.

  13. I can see the fire from point Ormond in Elwood across the bay…. I drove out to see if I could see it

  14. Very convenient that refineries are catching fire even in non middle east countries too…

I like how the Daily Mail has this story and not the ABC, The Age, The Guardian, or even News.com.au…

    Wellp

    That’s it.

Only a global depression will bring fuel prices back down now
