The other day, I heard a Catalan person refer to a woman from Madrid as "Hispaniola". Based on the tone, it seemed derogatory or bigoted. I asked about this on r/Barcelona and got mixed reactions. What is your take?

You might get mixed reactions here as well, this sub seems to hate history for whatever reason.

The video isnāt entirely accurate, at least in the east of the peninsula.
In Valencia, a Valencian Romance languageāwhich had evolved from Vulgar Latināwas spoken alongside Arabic even during the Taifa of Valencia period.
With the arrival of James I in 1238, the languages used in the city were respected, and Arabic fell into disuse.
Of course, even today, people in Valencia still speak their own language rather than Catalan. Official texts written in Catalan in Catalonia are translated into Valencian in Valencia, and vice versa.
The official websites of Spanish public offices are required to be translated into all official languages.
For example, if you go to [https://www.interior.gob.es/](https://www.interior.gob.es/), you can see in the top right-hand corner that you can choose between Catalan, Galician, Basque, Valencian, Spanish and English.
I donāt know why the person who made the video didnāt know this, as it is common knowledge. We have the Valencian jarchas written in romance-valencian in the 11th century; itās not as if theyāre hidden š On the other side and Valencian Statute of Autonomy states that Valencian (and not Catalan) is the official language of the Valencian Community.
So, well, not really historically accurate but sort of propaganda.
If you go to Madrid youāll here people say āla catalanaā with a derogatory tone. A lot of Catalans donāt considered themselves Spanish so there is this retarded back and forth off insults and overall cringe nationalism from loud low iq people.

I once had a friend who worked in a museum in Madrid. A Catalan couple refused to speak Spanish to him and he was asked to use English instead. To him this was ridiculous.
I don’t judge, because we all have feelings about our regions, but I think the majority of us are proud of our languages and our cultures no matter the origin. I grew up in Galicia with friends from all over Spain and we all knew words in each other’s languages, we taught each other and we joked about funny sounding words every now and then.
I think you’ll find people of all sorts everywhere, but our media has fed us a lot of nonsense through the years which has led to some people becoming very confrontational, no matter the “side”.
Personally, I love what the public TV has been doing in recent years, by including musicians from all over Spain who use their languages as they please. Turning on the TV and seeing people like Rodrigo Cuevas is such a joy ā¤ļø I hope it becomes the new normal.
Where is Phoenician, Celtic, Iberian, Celtiberian, Tartesic, Greek, Aquitanian, Guanche, Latin?
Those, together with the ones in the map, and a complex cumulative of thousand of years of interactions between different ethnic groups, is what Spain is.
