The Region of Western Macedonia has signed a contract for the construction of modern facilities at the Greece–North Macedonia border crossing in Laimos, Prespa, marking the launch of a project aimed at upgrading cross-border infrastructure in the area.

The project, with a budget of 6.25 million euros, is part of the Interreg 2021–2027 program. The contract was signed at the Regional Unit of Florina headquarters between Regional Governor Giorgos Amanatidis and a representative of the contractor, Ergon A.T.T.E.V.E.

The development αφορά the construction of comprehensive facilities to serve the Greek side of the border crossing in Laimos, as part of plans to reopen the Prespa crossing following a bilateral agreement between the two countries.

According to the project design, modern control facilities will be built for both entry and exit, with a total of eight control points—four for the Police and four for Customs. A central two-story building will also be constructed, housing control services on the ground floor and support and temporary accommodation spaces for staff on the upper level.

The project also includes the construction of two auxiliary buildings with public sanitation facilities, as well as the development of temporary parking areas to ensure the smooth and safe passage of passengers and vehicles of up to five tons.

The total implementation period is set at 24 months from the signing of the contract.

Regional authorities said the investment is expected to strengthen Western Macedonia’s role as a cross-border hub, while supporting visitor flows and boosting the local economy, particularly tourism in the wider Prespa area. It is also expected to contribute to closer cooperation between Greece and North Macedonia and facilitate coordination between border authorities.
