Viktor Stoyanov, the lead MP candidate of the Anti-Corruption Bloc in Ruse,  Wednesday expressed strong concern over the critical state of blood donation in Bulgaria, describing it as a “disaster” and an issue of national security, according to the political formation.

Stoyanov speaks of long-standing public apathy and the lack of strategic blood bank reserves. He shares his personal experience as a long-time donor (69 blood donations) and his disappointment with bureaucratic indifference, which he says has previously undermined civic initiatives and campaigns.

According to him, blood donation in Bulgaria is in a “state of disaster” that threatens national security due to insufficient reserves. He argues that a mindset of indifference prevails until the problem becomes personal, and that past attempts at reform – such as campaigns and roundtables – have been blocked by “bureaucratic disinterest” within state institutions.

He proposes several solutions, including lotteries for donors, vouchers for young adults who become regular blood donors, a digital deposit-based system, and military units with mobile teams for blood collection in each region.

He also notes that proposals already exist in parliament, but says that decades of suffering have continued because there are not enough motivated MPs to resolve the issue. “Empathy is the blood of society. The cause is Bulgaria,” Stoyanov stated.
