SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Several students suffered minor injuries Friday afternoon when a wild turkey flew through the windshield of a school bus in Somerset County, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. as the bus was leaving Conemaugh Township Elementary School following dismissal.

The bus was traveling south on Route 219 when police say the bird suddenly flew into its path, breaking through the windshield and entering the vehicle.

Officials said the turkey died after entering the bus. Several children were cut and scraped by shattered glass, but injuries were described as minor.

The driver exited Route 219 and safely pulled over near the Jerome exit. All students were later released to their parents.

Police praised the driver for remaining calm during the incident and helping keep the children calm until help arrived.
