Preliminary data from Eurostat indicates the euro area recorded a goods trade surplus with the rest of the world in February. The surplus stood at 11.5 billion euros, a figure notably lower than the 23.1 billion euro surplus recorded in the same month a year earlier.

This contraction in the annual surplus coincided with a decline in both exports and imports. Euro area exports fell by 6.7 percent compared to February of the previous year, while imports saw a 2.2 percent decrease. On a monthly basis, the February surplus represented a significant improvement from a deficit recorded in January, driven largely by a sharp increase in the surplus from the machinery and vehicles sector.

Analysis of specific sectors reveals mixed performance over the year. The chemicals sector experienced a substantial reduction in its surplus, and the machinery and vehicles sector also recorded a smaller surplus compared to the previous February. Conversely, the energy sector continued to reduce its deficit year-on-year.

For the first two months of the year, the cumulative euro area trade surplus was approximately half the level seen in the same period a year prior, with both exports and imports registering declines. Trade between euro area nations also decreased over this two-month period.

The broader European Union followed a similar pattern, posting a goods trade surplus in February that was significantly lower than the surplus from a year earlier. EU exports and imports both fell compared to February of the previous year. The monthly shift from a deficit in January to a surplus in February was again attributed to a recovery in the machinery and vehicles sector. Year-on-year, the chemicals and machinery sectors saw their surpluses diminish, while the energy deficit narrowed.

The EU’s cumulative surplus for January and February was also markedly lower than the previous year, with steeper declines in extra-EU exports than imports. Intra-EU trade saw a marginal decrease.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, both the euro area and the EU saw their trade balances fall in February compared to January, as the rate of increase for imports outpaced that for exports. Over a recent three-month period, euro area exports to non-member countries declined, while EU imports from outside the bloc saw a slight increase.

The published figures are provisional and include estimates for one member state for which February data was not available at the time of compilation.
