A political cartoon by Megan Herbert, with the heading "Priority Housing".

The image is divided into two panels, which look similar in that they are government offices of some kind with public servants behind glass windows answering enquiries. The office on the left is full of people from all walks of life lining up for assistance to find emergency and affordable housing . One anxious man, whose wife and small children are with him, is at the window saying, "We need housing. Something affordable and energy efficient to increase our security and improve our productivity." The answer from the person behind the glass is, "Well sir, there's a waiting list…". In the right panel, the office is crowded with a huge bank of data processors. A man in a suit is leaning on the counter smilingly saying to the person behind the glass, "These need housing. Something huge and energy and water intensive. To threaten job security in the name of increased productivity." To which the person behind the glass responds, "Yes sir, there's a fast-track…"

  1. The other thing about these data centres is that they are the excuse to lay off people and shift those jobs offshore. So they also need your seat in the office as well as all the energy, water and investment $.

I work for a company that is desperately chasing data centres for their business (I work for an electricity provider). The amount of network enhancement we need to provide, and the amount of electricity these things consume is absolutely immoral.

  3. Is this going to be the new NIMBY angle? That the housing shortage is somehow caused by data centres?

  4. Ah yes, the government office where you go when you want to find a place to store your data centres.

  8. Not an AI guy but the comic doesn’t make a lot of sense. Companies are paying to build data centres. They’re not being managed by the public housing authority…
