Rosa Rademakers won the prestigious Breakthrough Prize for her discovery that a genetic abnormality causes both frontotemporal dementia and ALS. Her research, which started with a family with both diseases, showed that a repeat in the C9orf72 gene plays an important role. Although there is no treatment yet, the discovery has generated a lot of research and new insights into the diseases.
