The public hearings for the e-mobility legislation are this week. If they pass (likely), Queensland will join North Korea and New Jersey as the only places in the world that you need a licence to ride a bicycle.

  1. I think they scrubbed the Wednesday hearing and pushed Friday to be the first, then another on Monday.

    Someone needs more time?

Just carry your spare traditional bicycle in your back pocket so you can whip it out anytime you get forcefully nudged onto the footpath by the side panel of a ranger whilst riding down the middle of gympie road at 8:30am on a school day.

I do think you should need to a licence or at least to register e-bikes capable of going more than 40kph. See plenty of children who wouldn’t normally be old enough to ride a motorcycle on the road riding around just as fast with no awareness or respect for road and traffic rules, no insurance, and almost killing themselves themselves and others.

  5. There should be more vignettes added for “TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT THEN” then “THERE ARE NO TRAINS RIGHT NOW”

It’s not a licence for riding a bicycle. It’s a licence for riding a motorised vehicle.

I saw a post on FB about supporting kids riding to school, and every second comment was someone who had a problem with it one way or another. I know this sounds dramatic, but this whole debacle has really made me lose faith a little, both of society and politicians, and that second one was already a low bar.

Qld should have just kept using horse and cart and we wouldn’t be in this weird situation

Lots more submissions posted on the site, most of them in agreement that the bill is crazy

  10. Meanwhile. Sydney and Melbourne have both realised the errors of their ways and are investing in expanding active transport to encourage more people do ride instead of drive.

For a city that loves to shit on them, we sure do feel the need to copy them, mistakes and all.
