Ankara — 110 miners from Doruk Mining, who started a hunger strike in front of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, were detained. The Independent Maden-İş Union reacted by stating that the detentions were a response to workers’ demands.

The miners, who set out from Eskişehir on April 13 and walked to Ankara to receive wages and compensation, reached the capital after 9 days. The workers who came to the Ministry took off their clothes and started a hunger strike, saying “We are hungry, we are poor, we are naked.”

According to the union’s statement, a total of 110 miners were detained by police intervention during the strike. The following statements were made in the statement made on the union’s social media account:

“110 miners were detained! While we were waiting to find an interlocutor in front of the Ministry of Energy, the response was to detain 110 of our friends. We are miners, we are not intimidated by detentions; we leave and continue where we left off. We have said before: We came to Ankara with our shrouds, we are here!”

What are the demands?

In addition to their unpaid salaries for months, the miners demand the payment of severance and notice pay before and after SDIF, the abolition of unpaid leave, the improvement of worker health and safety conditions, the reinstatement of workers dismissed due to union activities, and the expropriation of the mine.
