The Embassy of Denmark in India has announced a time-limited vacancy for the position of Officer – Adoptions, a specialist role within its Political and Communications Team in New Delhi.

This full-time position is initially offered for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension, starting on 1 August 2026, and the application deadline is 4 May 2026.

The role is part of a broader diplomatic effort to address historical intercountry adoption cases between Denmark and India while also contributing to the embassy’s political reporting and engagement work.

Role Overview and Purpose

The Officer – Adoptions position is designed to support adoptees and their families in understanding past adoption cases, tracing adoption histories, and improving transparency around historical records. A central responsibility is to help build structured cooperation with relevant Indian organisations, authorities, and stakeholders involved in child welfare and adoption systems.

The officer will also contribute to developing standardized procedures for handling adoption-related inquiries and cases in the future. This includes ensuring that documentation, communication, and case handling processes are consistent, sensitive, and aligned with both Danish and Indian legal and institutional frameworks.

In addition to adoption-focused work, the officer will support the Political and Communications Team in monitoring Indian domestic politics and foreign relations. This includes drafting background notes, preparing briefing materials, supporting delegation visits, and assisting with general political reporting. The proportion of time dedicated to political work will depend on the volume of adoption-related cases at any given time.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be expected to carry out a range of tasks, including:

  • Assisting adoptees and families in accessing information about historical adoption cases
  • Coordinating and establishing a professional network with Indian authorities and organisations
  • Supporting the development of long-term procedures for adoption case management
  • Assisting the political team with research, documentation, and briefing materials
  • Preparing notes for meetings, visits, and diplomatic engagements
  • Conducting field-related travel, particularly to southern Indian states, where many adoption cases originate
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by embassy management

This role requires a balance between sensitive casework and structured policy support, making it both operational and analytical in nature.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree in law, political science, international relations, or another relevant academic field. Professional experience in adoption-related work—either within government institutions, NGOs, or international organisations—is essential.

A strong professional network within relevant child welfare, legal, or social service institutions is highly desirable. The embassy is seeking a candidate who is independent, responsible, and capable of handling sensitive information with discretion.

Key competencies include:

  • Strong organizational and logistical skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Experience working in multicultural and diplomatic environments
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships
  • Strong written and verbal English proficiency
  • Advanced computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office tools
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and meet deadlines

Flexibility and willingness to travel are important, as field visits—especially to southern India—will be required to support case investigations and stakeholder engagement.

Working Environment and Benefits

The Embassy of Denmark in India offers a dynamic and international work environment with approximately 70 staff members, including both locally employed personnel and diplomats posted from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The workplace is characterized by a flat organizational structure and a strong emphasis on collaboration and professional development.

Employees benefit from:

  • A stimulating multicultural work environment
  • Opportunities for professional and personal development
  • A high degree of independence in managing responsibilities
  • Structured on-the-job learning and skill enhancement

Employment Conditions

The position is a full-time local contract governed by Indian labour law. Key employment conditions include:

  • Standard working hours: 37 hours per week
  • 25 days of paid annual leave
  • 13th month salary
  • Medical coverage (80% reimbursed by the embassy)
  • EPF pension scheme enrollment
  • Salary based on qualifications and experience
  • Travel requirements as part of job duties

Candidates must also pass security clearance by Danish authorities and provide a clean criminal record prior to appointment.

Application Process

Interested candidates must submit their application in English, including a cover letter, CV, academic certificates, references, and 2–3 professional contacts. Applications should be sent to [email protected] with the subject line “Application for Officer – Adoptions” no later than 4 May 2026.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.

Conclusion

This role is ideal for professionals with experience in adoption systems, child welfare, or human rights policy who are interested in working at the intersection of diplomacy, social justice, and historical case resolution. It offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful international cooperation while working within a respected diplomatic mission.
