WANA (Apr 22) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, held a high-level phone conversation on Wednesday morning to discuss escalating regional tensions and the fallout from recent military actions.
The discussion centered on the security, legal, and economic implications of military strikes carried out by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.
Condemnation of Aggression and International Responsibility
During the call, Minister Araghchi detailed the damage resulting from the recent military incursions. He emphasized that it is the collective responsibility of all nations to condemn what he described as “gross violations” of the UN Charter and international law.
“The current situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a direct consequence of U.S. lawlessness and its arbitrary military aggression against a sovereign UN member state,” Araghchi stated.
Security in the Strait of Hormuz
Addressing maritime security, Araghchi asserted that as a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has taken necessary measures in accordance with international law to protect its national security. He warned that the responsibility for any resulting disruptions to the global economy lies squarely with the aggressors.
Nuclear Facilities and “Double Standards”
The Iranian Foreign Minister specifically highlighted attacks targeting Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. He criticized European nations for their “unacceptable silence” regarding these actions, warning that double standards are:
- Weakening the foundations of international law.
- Undermining the global non-proliferation regime.
Regional Stability and Lebanon
The two diplomats also reviewed the situation in Lebanon, stressing the urgent need to respect the ceasefire.
For his part, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Persian Gulf. He expressed Italy’s readiness to play a constructive role in de-escalating tensions and fostering stability across the broader region.
