Assuming we have fair midterms and a sane transfer of power, Republicans are so fucked.

  2. gravity_kills on

If we want to end the gerrymandering nonsense forever we can switch to using Proportional Representation with each state as one multi member district. No more arguing over lines, and no more shutting third parties out of representation.

Ah, nothing like the taste of political drama to spice up my day pass the popcorn and those tears!

  4. I just wanted the leopards to eat peoples faces! They weren’t suppose to eat **MY** face!

  5. Can’t believe the Democrats acted like Republicans for once. They aren’t supposed to be able to do that!!!

  6. At least VA and CA presented it to the citizens who were able to vote on the proposal. Texas et al didn’t.

  7. RetroTheGameBro on

Conservatives seething that…the people voted for something the people want, aka, how the government is *supposed* to work?

  8. Actually saw the following elsewhere. “It only passed by 51.3% that’s too narrow it should be ignored!!”

  9. hellycopterinjuneer on

The hilarious part of all of this is this: Texas redistricting that triggered this response diluted some of their previously solid-red districts to the point that they are now vulnerable. Texas Republicans could actually end up losing seats. It’s going to be so funny to see this blow up in Greg Abbot’s face.

Now Florida, hellscape that it is, wants to redraw its maps on some maga bullshit

  11. I hate that this is my response but this is what we’ve been reduced to in the US…

    “But they started it”

whats not fair is allowing a party to participate in democracy while they openly attack it. this should have the party banned, all the money flowing through it seized, and the largest donors to it investigated for possible treason. allowing the republican party to exist is unfair to every american.

every government should be created with the intent to move more and more towards empowering people and enacting their collective will, not the will of some class of billionaires, fascists, or coalition of religious cults and pedophiles.

  13. MAGA: “brilliant 4D-chess move redistricting there Texas bravo!”

Also MAGA: “how dare Virginia do something so undemocratic as hold a referendum to redistrict to counter our redistricting?!”

  14. That_Jicama2024 on

Let’s all remember which party started the whole redistricting thing to try and rig votes. Just look at how most liberal areas are gerrymandered to hell in red states just so that the liberals have no representation.

  15. Image on the left, democrats/republicans 50% representation. Image on the right, democrats 91% representation. Population density is a major consideration drawing these lines, it’s not as easy as 50% colored blue and 50% colored red is fair. You end up with one side speaking louder than the majority that way. Yet gerrymandering will gerrymander.

  16. I still cant get over the fact that Magarats still think that land should give them more votes then where the density of the population is at. You see them mountains over there.. I herd dey voted 4 dat orange fellah right thur.

  17. States should be redistricted every 5-10 years based on the states voting. If 40% voted R and 60% votes D then 60% of districts (or as close as possible)should be democratic and 40% should be Republicans (or as close as possible).

  18. Let’s not forget about the time MAGA tried redrawing Florida’s congressional map and it was declared to be unconstitutional because they included patches of the ocean in the democratic districts

  19. Wouldn’t it be funny if not all redrawn districts didn’t turn blue as anticipated?

  20. It honestly shouldn’t be called gerrymandering, that implies the state voted on a map to benefit them that voters had no control over.

This is like consent-mandering, because the voters approved of this.

  21. GrimmRadiance on

It’s not fair. It absolutely is taking voting power away from certain people, and it should be stopped.

The problem is that this is a direct response to gerrymandering by Republicans in other states.

Ideally, democrats regain power and immediately ban gerrymandering as one of the first priorities.

Even if it means they lose in the future.

  22. They fucked around, now they are finding out.

I’m not a lawyer, would it be possible for Congress to pass an anti gerrymandering law or even introduce proportional representation, or would that be unconstitutional because it says that the states decide how to do elections?

  23. Certain-Singer-9625 on

That the vote succeeded by <1% is kind of sad. Shoulda been more than that. But I’ll take the win!

  24. unaskthequestion on

The craziest thing was Trump (trying to) comment “This is the democrats trying to steal the election”.

  25. Independent-Bug-9352 on

It’s worth noting that the crooked conservative supreme court is going to likely gut the remaining part of the Voting Rights Act, which could hand up to a dozen seats back to Republicans.

So this is necessary in order to fight fire with fire.

  26. 100percentkneegrow on

The difference is that Democrats would prefer it go away but Republicans want to keep gerrymandering. Maybe they’ll learn and change their position.

  27. WidgetWarrior on

Funny how MAGA could have prevented ALL this if they weren’t such fucking assholes in Texas, doing this amid a horrific natural disaster in their own state.

  28. danleon950410 on

People voted for it. Texas Gov fucking tried to pass it just because they wanted

  29. Oh well sucks to suck maga, maybe you shouldn’t have picked this fight but that requires you to think a minute into the future.

  30. There’s a reason an unspoken contract between both parties for the longest time was not to pass anything that you don’t want the other side to use against you. gop are fucking morons

  31. It’s not fair. My vote should count 5x more than someone else’s because they a democrat.

  32. Space_Slime_LF on

I understand why it needs to be done… but in the future can we at least try for reasonable shapes?
