Hi

We will be visiting Riga next month, really looking forward to it! I’m planning out a bunch of stuff we can do. I have this list so far and I’m still adding to it, if theres any thoughts / additions / removals let me know ☺️ but I was wondering would anyone have a bit more information on the buses that go to Tallin and back? Is there an app I can use? Is it easy enough?

Thanks in advance any help is appreciated ☺️

    1. A few years ago I took a flixbus from Rīga to Tallinn, so you could use their app, but there are other companies as well.

But to be honest, I don’t think a day trip to Tallinn from Rīga, especially by bus, is a good idea. You’ll spend more time on the bus there and back than in the city itself, and Tallinn definitely deserves more time than just a few hours. Personally I’d stay there for the night at least and then take the bus back next afternoon.

Martina bekerija – not the fanciest of places but a great place to try all of Latvias tastiest pastries, make sure to try the ones with spek

    3. A few head’s up:

      – Black Magic is not a bar, it’s a tourist trap that sell chocolate and have a small overpriced bar in the basement
      – Kubs Depo have a new location, it is not in Centrs anymore. It is a concert venue now.

I also suggest not doing a same day trip to Estonia or Lithuania if you are going with a bus. By car it’s fine but it will be very exhausting to go back and forth by bus on a same day. Stay over for a night. Buy tickets on the bus websites: Luxexpress and Ecoline are both good and reliable operators. Bus trips are simple and easy – just board it on a bus station and off you go. Additional suggestions is to do a day trips to other towns outside of Riga – Sigulda, Cēsis, Kuldīga can be done in one day and you can go either by bus or train. You can buy the tickets either in the station or here 1188.lv – site is also in English. Or you could go to the beach and see Baltic sea if you go in summer. You can get there by public city transport or go to the seaside town Jūrmala by train.

    5. I used luxexpress for this exact route. Easy to online and many departures per day. I think it is a 4 hour bus ride

We visited Rīga for a week – my wife, me, and our three kids, ages 12-15. More than enough tobsee and do, and we hope to come back and see more, as well as other cities in Latvia. If it were just me and my wife, there would be even more to see and do.

That said, I’m not sure day trips to Talinn and Vinlius would ge wise for your first time. If it were your only trip to the Baltics, then maybe.

If you want an easy day trip from Rīga, I recommend taking the train to Jelgava (less than hour). Plenty to see and do for the day. I recommend seeing the Jelgava Pīls, if anything else. You could even make it back to Rīga for dinner.
