A care home in Dorset has given residents a taste of eastern Europe.

Hyacinth House in Wimborne, run by Barchester Healthcare, celebrated Romanian Day with a cultural event led by its Romanian staff members.

Residents enjoyed traditional food, hand-crafted textiles, and clothing made from family-owned sheep’s wool.

Ceramics made from Romanian clay and intricate, traditional costumes were also part of the experience, offering a hands-on connection to the country’s heritage.

Kamila Gagala, general manager at Hyacinth House, said: “Our residents and staff enjoyed learning about our colleagues’ culture.

“We have such a diverse team, and we are all very different and unique.”

Residents were encouraged to engage with the items on display, trying on traditional garments, tasting Romanian dishes, and learning about the personal histories of the care staff.

The event also included storytelling, giving residents an insight into life in Romania through the memories and experiences of the team.

One resident, Shirley, said: “That was so lovely, I have learnt a lot today.

“The girls put up a great session for us and the clothing and how it was crochet back in the day was very interesting for me to see.”

Hyacinth House provides residential and respite care and is part of one of the UK’s largest care providers in Barchester Healthcare.
