The opposition SDSM party has submitted draft amendments to North Macedonia’s Government Act, proposing that the ban on holding dual citizenship apply not only to MPs, as proposed by the ruling VMRO-DPMNE, but to the entire government. In a Facebook post, the party also called for the changes to be fast-tracked in Parliament and to take effect immediately.
On Wednesday, VMRO-DPMNE submitted amendments to the law that would bar future MPs from holding a second citizenship. Among the sponsors were MPs whom SDSM claims hold Bulgarian citizenship. The proposal was added to Parliament’s agenda for consideration under a fast-track procedure.
According to SDSM, the bill proposed by VMRO-DPMNE is “yet another scam by the government” of North Macedonia because, under their proposal, the changes would apply only to MPs in the next parliamentary term, not to current MPs.
“SDSM is exposing this manipulation and is taking concrete steps. Alongside amendments to the Government Act, we will also submit amendments to VMRO’s proposal so that they take effect immediately. No MP or elected or appointed official will have dual citizenship, and this will take effect immediately,” the opposition party said.
