A Castlebar photographer is set to represent Ireland on the world stage after being selected for one of the most prestigious international photography competitions.

Julia Dunin, a fine art and commercial photographer based in Castlebar, has travelled to Reykjavík, Iceland, to compete in the World Photography Cup as part of the Irish team.

She is one of just four photographers chosen to represent Ireland this year, and notably the only woman on the national team. She is also the sole representative from Mayo and the wider West of Ireland.

Julia secured her place after her portrait entry was shortlisted and went on to receive the prestigious Best of Nation award.

With more than a decade of experience, Julia has built an acclaimed career specialising in fine art and commercial photography, particularly work centred on women, empowerment and representation.

Her photography has been featured in leading publications including Vogue UK, the The Irish Times, the Irish Independent and IMAGE Magazine. She has also worked with Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels across Ireland and Europe.

Among her most celebrated projects is Body as Landscape, a fine art series exploring the relationship between the female form and the Irish landscape. The project recently received support through the Mayo Artist Bursary.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Julia said she hopes her success will inspire others in the region.

“It is a privilege to represent Ireland on an international stage, and I hope this recognition encourages more photographers — and more women in particular — from the West of Ireland to pursue their creative ambitions at the highest level,” she said. “Mayo has extraordinary talent. It deserves to be seen.”

Julia has previously received numerous awards, including honours from the Irish Professional Photographers and Videographers Association, the Irish Food Writing Awards, the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year and Nikon Photographer of the Year in Poland.

The World Photography Cup is currently taking place in Reykjavík, bringing together some of the finest photographic talent from around the globe.
