Italy’s Eni remains bullish on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), even as its rivals row back on their low-carbon jet fuel ambitions. Already the world’s fastest-growing biorefiner, Eni is aiming to triple its SAF production capability to more than 2 million metric tons per year (662 million gallons/yr) by 2030, when its total biorefining capacity could reach 5 million tons/yr. With BP and Shell pulling the plug on their projects to build SAF plants, Eni sees an ideal opportunity to fill the gap between available supplies and demand that has swelled after SAF mandates took effect on January 1, 2025 in the EU and UK.
