It’s mostly just tight fitment and geometry that prevents it slipping off. There may be rivet(s) on the backside that is not usually visible. Especially at the location where you see brass looping around near handles and the external leather loop is attached.

The upper band stays because it rests on the double sheath. The lower bad is held by the brass ring that is more narrow than the leather after it.
