Statistics Norway will release first-quarter data for the Carriage of goods by lorry across the national border on 8 May 2026, according to the source published on 25 April 2026.

The upcoming release covers Norwegian-registered lorries with a carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes and above, the market share of Norwegian and foreign lorries in cross-border freight, and figures for foreign lorries operating to, from, and within Norway.

Data for the fourth quarter of 2025 show that total transport performance by Norwegian lorries, combining national and international transport, reached 5,780.7 million tonne-kilometres. This figure declined by 6.7% compared with the fourth quarter of 2024 but rose by 2.0% compared with the fourth quarter of 2020.

National transport for hire or reward and own account accounted for 5,443.5 million tonne-kilometres, representing 94.2% of the total. Within this category, national transport for hire or reward made up 4,851.5 million tonne-kilometres, while national transport for own account contributed 591.9 million tonne-kilometres.

International transport for hire or reward and own account totaled 337.2 million tonne-kilometres in the fourth quarter of 2025, a drop of 23.4% from the same quarter a year earlier and 32.8% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2020.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, total tonnage carried across the border by lorry reached 3.6 million tonnes, an increase of 7.3% from the fourth quarter of 2024 and 1.3% from the fourth quarter of 2020. Norwegian lorries carried 1.0 million tonnes, or 28.0% of the total. Danish, Swedish, and Finnish lorries together also carried 1.0 million tonnes, representing a 28.3% share. Lorries from other Baltic countries transported 0.5 million tonnes, accounting for 14.7%, while Polish lorries moved 0.4 million tonnes, or 11.9%.

For the full year 2025, total cross-border lorry transport reached 14,387,718 tonnes. Norwegian lorries accounted for 28.2% of that total, down from 30.3% in 2024. Swedish lorries held a 22.1% share, Danish lorries 4.5%, Finnish lorries 3.1%, German lorries 2.4%, Polish lorries 12.2%, and lorries from Baltic countries 14.6%. The category ‘Other’ rose to 13.0% of the total in 2025, up from 8.0% in 2024.

Since the second quarter of 2025, import data have been expanded to include VOEC consignments, which lack carrier nationality information, increasing the volume recorded under ‘unknown carrier nationality’ and affecting market share calculations for both Norwegian and foreign lorries.

In 2024, foreign lorries recorded total transport performance of 8,135.6 million tonne-kilometres in journeys to, from, and within Norway. This represented a 2.7% increase from 2023 but a 3.2% decline from 2020. Cross-trade transport between Norway and abroad accounted for 55.8% of foreign lorry activity, followed by transport to Norway from the lorry’s registration country at 23.6%, transport from Norway to the registration country at 11.9%, and cabotage within Norway at 8.8%.
