In the Vilkaviškis district, two dead, possibly illegal, migrants were found, police reported on Friday. The deceased man and woman were about 30-35 years old, BNS reports.
The police report notes that the bodies were found in a forest near Rukštanėliai without external signs of violence.
Eight more illegal migrants without identification documents were also detained at the scene. Two people were taken to the hospital for examination. Later, all migrants were handed over to border guards.
Police representative Ramūnas Matonis reported that the deceased also had no documents and appeared to be migrants.
Giedrius Mišutis, a representative of the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), told BNS that there are suspicions that the migrants entered Lithuania from Latvia, and in turn, came to Latvia from Belarus.
“It is planned that they will go to the Center for Registration of Foreigners, and after collecting evidence and facts, the Latvian side should take them back,” Mišutis said.
According to him, the migrants identified themselves as citizens of Ethiopia, Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, and Eritrea.
As the VSAT representative noted, in recent months significantly more migrants have been illegally arriving in Latvia from Belarus. Later, many of them are believed to be trying to reach Western Europe via Lithuania and Poland. According to him, the method of transporting migrants has also changed.
