Good to see some people making good choices. Hope those same folks are installing solar as well. It’s a big up front cost – I did it six years ago when it was even worse – but it sure is worth it. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see restrictions on fuel purchases or €3 petrol/diesel by the end of this year. It will only get more worth the switch.
For the folks buying ICE cars, I hope they hold onto them for a long time. I don’t see resale values for them holding up for long.

As of early 2026, electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) make up a rapidly growing portion of Ireland’s fleet, with BEVs alone accounting for over 22% of new car registrations in April 2026. While fully electric (BEV) market share for new cars in 2025 was around 18.9%, total electric cars make up roughly 7% of the total national car fleet.
At end of the day people not buying in to it because the stats say they only make up 7% of the entire fleet of the country. So 93% of vehicles are not EV. Sorry but that’s the truth

I work next to a second hand dealership.
Since January 2025 they had 20+ Nissan Leafs parked up gathering moss.
All gone in the last month. And for more than they were advertised at last year.
Supply and demand or patience and greed. Either way, it’s interesting to see the real world impact in real time.

Which means regrets will surge 100% lol
The electricity price in Ireland makes it impossible to take advantage of evs, not to mention absolute lack of infrastructure, “quick chargers” that not only don’t charge at the speed they should but they also cost a kidney making a price per km twice as expensive as petrol engines and on top of that vrt price that is absolutely killing the ev sales. And don’t say grants, these are pocketed by dealers as always, zero benefit to consumers.
See Norway, they know what’s up and how to prepare the market, no wonder the ev market is 95%. Shame on Ireland.

Hello, I’m an electric car. I can’t go very fast, or very far and if you drive me people will think you’re gay.

And what exactly do most people living in old apartment or duplex blocks do? We don’t have private car spaces and charging points! Same with the solar panels. We have no roofs available to place our own panels on.
Seems like a two tier society emerging. Those that can escape from electricity companies and those that can’t – and will be crucified by them with rising unit charges to make up for their falling income from those who *can* escape them.

Good! then the hegemony of the crude oil suppliers will be eroded …

Bought an EV last year and I absolutely love it. Couldn’t go back to an ICE car now, feels awful to drive in comparison, besides the obvious savings with regard to fuel.

Really taking off.
Wonder if EVs will hit 30% by the end of the year.
Good stuff.
Elon musk profits more
Wait until electric prices sky rocket
You can really feel it on the public charging grid. Queues along the motorways, especially on BH weekends.
Even in Dublin, charger that was mostly free near me always has at least 1 car there.
You can be sure there is something like this in the Gouvernement plans…
