‘When Arno arrived at school with his father, the lesson had already begun.’
This is how one of the most significant works of Estonian literature begins – a work which, I believe, is known to young and old alike in Estonia: ‘Spring’ (1912/1913) by Oskar Luts. In it, drawing on his own childhood, he tells the story of a group of schoolchildren in rural Estonia during the late Tsarist era. The 1969 film adaptation is a popular Estonian film classic.
Unfortunately, my language skills aren’t up to scratch, so I’m reading the novel in Russian translation.
I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂

Nice! I loved it, both as a kid and an adult. Also next one, summer. I hope you like it!
Из эстонской классики очень хорошо перевели “Tõde ja õigus”. Сложный, но очень насыщенный и очень сильный текст. Мне стыдно, что я чам так поздно до него добрался, но это действительно то, что заслуживает ярлык классика.
The Russian edition of the book has one of the weirdest book covers.
Sa ei näita Imelikule seda rehkendust muidu…. Muidu ma löön sind….
…Mis nad siis tulevad meie õue peale kaklema?…
