"The Icelandic government has submitted a bill on a departure point where displaced people, including children, would be allowed to be placed in detention camps. This would allow the deprivation of liberty of children and adults in this country who have committed no crime. Research shows that detention causes serious harm to children, even in the short term, such as sleep disturbances, anxiety and impaired development. Although the Nordic countries have been used as an example, Norwegian courts have come to the conclusion that keeping children in such situations violates their fundamental rights. A number of Icelandic human rights organizations have warned against the bill. The approval of members of Althingi to deprive children of their freedom is a clear violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which has legal effect in Iceland – and a clear violation of our basic values ​​as Icelanders. Children belong in schools and on day care, not in detention. We, the undersigned, demand that Alþingi reject the bill."
