    1. Maybe she’s offering to pay as well to help put right the wrongs of her ancestor’s

    2. I don’t agree with the sentiment, but I’m not sure what difference their heritage makes.

    3. If she was someone that _genuinely_ cared about slavery and wasn’t just jumping on the black reparations bandwagon, she’d want to see that money (_off the magic money tree, it appears_) distributed towards ending modern slavery which is rife worldwide affecting people of all backgrounds.

    4. Anywhere_everywhere7 on

      >However, she is also the daughter of a billionaire oil baron who was one of Africa’s richest men.

Of course she was, typical liberal, do as I say not what I do. Maybe ask her family first to pay some reparations.

    5. Huge_Horse_8945 on

Serious question: how do black brits feel about this? Her family were slave traders and want to recoup losses from being unable to trade slaves. It’s wild to me that someone would actually demand this. For me this really draws a line in the sand with groups who are unhappy with our involvement with slavery.

    6. Noonecanseemenow on

      So?

Are we demanding that parentage precludes you from certain causes?

    7. Can Greens just stick to the environment please? I did used to like them, until they felt they had to branch out into other areas of politics and they have just absolutely shit the bed since then.

      It’s just idiocy after idiocy.

    8. Helpful-Juggernaut33 on

WTF has that got to do with trying to run a council in England, these Green’s are wildly out of touch with the real world. Maybe if the greens had any real world policies apart from how much money the UK should send over seas they might get listened to.

Romans invaded my country, impregnated my peoples and stole everything. I want an umpa lumpa.

Another day, another green party member soiling themselves in public. Oh well.

A lot of African countries had tens of thousands of slaves in their states – are they going to pay reparations to their own people as well then? They didn’t have the wheel or beasts of burden, so they had to use people to compensate for that – that led directly to the slave trade with Europe as well.

I will wait eagerly for the north african states compensation to Europe for their vast slavery operations, the muslim states compensation to Europe, Africa and Asia for the millions of slaves they took and the Italian states reparations for their slavery rampage during the Roman Empire

    12. Psittacula2 on

It might be time to call out this Narrative for what it may really be.

On the surface, the logic does not add up here aka “attributing guilt or sin to people who are independent of past events and demanding they pay a modern fine or debt based off this.”

Of course emotionally it might appeal but the logic is absurd, if A then why not all species of A(a,a,a,a)?

Ok, if you dig around enough you will find some policy and research groups,

      * Came up with the idea of Slave Reparations as a MECHANISM for transferring money from developed nations to other nations as a way of sending CLIMATE CHANGE FUNDS to other nations via some spurious guilt trip in law attempt.

I kid you not. I wondered what the hell could be behind this claim, well you have a bunch of ivory tower nerds going from research into policy proposals and this is the output to present to the public.

Unfortunately deception does not go down well for very long, honesty really is the best way forwards.

Because knowing the above opens the flood gates for what other cooked up insanity is being used to send BILLIONS or MILLIONS of wealth of nations off the back of taxed workers in the UK?

The more you see how things work the more everyone in positions of power or authority ends up more and more looking like a used-car-salesman dressed up in fancy speech and pompous titles of fraudulent authority.

If anyone eg greens brings this up, ask them if it is in fact merely an excuse cooked up by some clever-clogs in ivory tower departments for their “golden goose” of climate change and if that is the real basis behind these claims…

They probably won’t be aware and it probably is not the only Trojan horse idea running around either.

    13. culture_vulture_1961 on

Reparations for historical wrongs are just a minefield. The call for payment for the African slave trade may sound simple but who pays?

Is it the UK government that banned the trade almost 200 years ago. Or is it the governments of African countries that actually captured people to sell to slavers.

And if someone does pay up who gets the money? This is a non issue that plays into the hands of the far right and makes progressive parties look stupid.

    14. Phoenix_Reforged on

Just put it to a vote, those that thinks we should pay reparations, should be the ones paying, thw area that votes for reparations, can allocate tax money towards it.

Seems fair to me, you get what you vote for, and you’ll get even less money, less investment

    15. wutanglan90 on

What a bunch of lunatics. Shes the daughter of a billionaire by the way.

    16. I’m glad that Britain has outlawed slavery, At least the kind they’re talking about here. We’re all slaves to capitalism but that’s by-the-by.

In the way that a child may awkwardly apologise for the poor behaviour of an elderly or deceased ancestor, we do not pass debts on to children. We may apologise as a nation for those ancestors. We should review if assets certain families gained due to slavery ought to be surrendered. But common persons who are generations removed from it, and likely even were serfs at the time with no way to stop or change or benefit from slavery, bear no fiscal or moral obligation. I strongly believe there are significantly more relevant matters to concern ourselves with going forward, like making the world a better place and ensuring that we leave something that isn’t burning down around them for our descendants. Enriching one group of persons at the ultimate cost of people who did not commit the crime is lunacy.

    17. Lazenbings on

I’m not a fan of reparations, but the majority of people in one way or another are likely descended from slave traders/owners. Something our ancestors did should not discount our opinions.

    18. rubber_moon on

Would prefer we tax the descendants of those whom we paid off to end slavery, if they still have considerable wealth or course.

    19. completefuckweasel on

Should we sue Italy for all the nasty things the Romans got up to?

    20. RoadToHerald on

She’s not a candidate in this election. I don’t get why you’re all overreacting. Just another smear from your favourite toilet paper, move along.

    21. Playing_One_Handed on

      > she is also the daughter of a billionaire oil baron who was one of Africa’s richest men.

Oh. So rich african wants us to give africa money for slaves their ancestors sold us?

For greens unvetted candidates this is actually impressive.

    22. charlottekeery on

I’ve never actually seen anyone give a shit about this in real life, part of me feels like it’s pure ragebait to cause further separation.

    23. Have you considered HOW it is that this black woman is a descendant of slave traders? What interaction did the white slave trader had with her ancestors that could have led to this, I wonder… 🤔

    24. Illustrious_Pie_2585 on

It’s easy to talk about reparations when you’re volunteering other people’s money, but let’s see if she opens her own wallet first.

    25. AwesomeWaiter on

The sheer amount of anti Green stories I’ve seen in the past few weeks is staggering, I’m not saying they aren’t newsworthy however Farage is literally telling the UK he’s going to put detention camps in constituencies that don’t vote for him and that seems to be a here one minute then gone in a day story. Whereas on the other hand we’re being bombarded by minor greens stories every day

    26. I’ve seen more articles pop up about the greens in the last 5 days than I have reform for the last 2 years. Quite an obvious media smear campaign but we’ll see how effective it is come the polls.

    27. Anti green propaganda has been wild here over the past week. I’m not excusing the person discussed here, but I can see some paid actors are working overtime

    28. Cynical_Classicist on

Yes. So are a lot of people. Why does that make them somehow a hypocrite?

    29. So funny to see Green critical articles on this sub with like 200 comments and only 20 upvotes – clearly because they brigade subs and downvote anything bad about them.

    30. It’s not at all surprising to see a black person as a descendant of a slaver. The sexual assult of slaves was pretty common place.

I think the majority of descendants from one of the USA founding fathers are from slaves that were sexually assaulted.

    31. before686entenz on

The hundreds of billions the west has already put into Africa has barely made a difference , and the reparations will end up in the pockets of warlords and corrupt politicians.

    32. Sadly after the success they had in few bi-elections. Both local and centrally.

Now under proper scrutiny, just like reform, they are no different to main parties, and they have just as many scandals, just as many candidates who should be no way near any real power, and their policies are not the kind that would work if we’re in power.

It is a shame as they were my protest vote in elecations we had last year. But I won’t be voting for them again.

    33. MadeOfEurope on

Descendant of a slave trader…DESCENDANT of a slave trader. I wonder how that happened?

    34. Competitive_Pen7192 on

I honestly believe people need to leave the reparation idea go.

Yes the original act was horrific but it was also hundreds of years ago and many things have happened since. The people caught up in it have both suffered and benefitted from their displacement since. It would be difficult to unpack it and decide whether they’d have been better off without the act.

Might as well blame Italy and Greece for being the OG colonisers and bankrupt them for all time with reparations.

    35. armchairdetective on

      Um.

I don’t know this person’s genealogy, but it might be s good idea for people this think about _why_ many Black Britons and African Americans are “descendants of slave traders.”

    36. Chill_Panda on

It’s crazy how the UK gets all the targeting for slave trade reparation.

It is completely fair to say the British empire was instrumental in setting up the global slave trade.

The global slave trade that everyone was taking part in. EVERYONE. African tribe leaders selling slaves to European traders. Russians raiding Poland for fresh slaves on the regular. America and their strange focus on black slaves.

HOWEVER, the British Empire was instrumental in ending the slave trade. We were the first to ban it, we forced the ban on others, and we used diplomacy elsewhere to ensure the trade as it was, was to be ended.

But now we have to pay reparations? Just like giving the museum items back, okay but to who? Who do we pay? Who do we send them to? Everyone has a claim, everyone wants something, no one deserves anything.

AT BEST, we should support countries most affected by the trade with policies and projects that help improve the countries.

    37. Blackmore_Vale on

What a load of bollocks. My partners family is Irish but live in the UK and my families of Irish decent to. We had no part of the transatlantic slave trade so why should we have to pay, if anything we are more entitled to reparations as well.

    38. marieascot on

My ancestors lost money due to slavery. They were seed merchants and went bankrupt after the corn laws were repealed and loads of cheap imports came in grown by slaves. They ended up wearing rags.

A lot of the media types saying we should ALL repay are trustafarians. I’m all for them rich public boys and girls shelling out reparations. Most UK people didn’t see any of that money indeed it was used to oppress us by the elite b****ds that are doing so today. The media does not help by depicting Georgians and Victorians as all living Bridgerton lifestyles. Most of us were in rags toiling in fields and factories.

    39. Standard DM hit piece. Proper stretch to try and manufacture a ‘gotcha’ just two days before the local elections. As if someone’s ancestors from centuries ago change the actual merit of a policy. Desperate stuff.

Guy guy guys……it’s the fucking Daily Mail. I’m not saying a Green Party member never said anything dumb or self serving….but this is the fucking rag of rag newspapers we are talking about. Isn’t this the same paper that said the Greens are Islamists Marxists recently?

You know, because Marxists are famously religious.

I take it as a given they will be twisting the truth or just outright making shit up until they prove otherwise.

I mean they are worse than the Telegraph. Remember when someone said they want to reform the Scottish prison system and the Telegraph made out they said they want to abolish all Scottish prisons?
