Definitely one of the few places that could handle it. A lot of the expensive facilities are still there from 2012 and it would be good for one the big hitters to hold it generationally.

Given the 2012 games were one of the few Olympics that worked financially I’d be down for this.

    3. Officially host it in a city outside of London (Manchester & Birmingham feel the best suited) but still spread the events across England, Wales & Scotland for the best suited venues to cut down on costs and this has the potential to be as big a success as London 2012

I would love to see the Olympics in the UK again in my lifetime. 2012 was truly something special and I feel like the vibes of the country have been downhill ever since.

This time lets not build a stadium with no realistic long term planning for its future meaning it’s crap for what it eventually gets used for…

We are one of the few countries that have the infrastructure to do it properly.

Huh maybe I’ll end up taking future kids to see an Olympics at the same age my parents took me. That would be really lovely.

I love London and have moved here permanently from Manchester, but I agree with others that it would be nice to officially host these games in a different city. I’d love to see a Scottish olympics in Edinburgh or Glasgow. Maybe the weather wouldn’t play ball?

    9. We should host it in another large city. Like Birmingham, Leeds or even Manchester.

Do some cash injection and gentrification in those areas to encourage people to move there (and improve infrastructure between London and these places) kinda like what HS2 was supposed to do before it was killed off

I like the optimism that the country isn’t going to fall apart by 2040

      That would be great!
The French also showed that you can built temporary venue.
Our existing 2012 venues in addition to temporary venues would mean that we would not need to spend too much.
If we could do that and have events across the uk that would be fantastic for the nation!

    12. A great idea. London does need the economic boost that a major sporting event brings and the rest of us in the UK are OK paying for this.

Sarcasm aside, this is a very good idea but should be hosted outside London. Birmingham and Glasgow both hosted the Commonwealth Games and even the North-East would do well by hosting the Olympics and would be a great boost for that area

But we only hosted it last year?

WTAF – how was that 14 years ago?

If stabbing and complaining about potholes are becoming sports we’ll smash it

I wonder if any of the 2012 structures are still usable? Like the swimming pool, although I’m not sure how feasible re-adding the extra seating would be.

    16. As long as it doesn’t solely go to the London black hole yet again. Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, Swansea, Belfast et al also need investment opportunities.
A games spread across the UK’s major cities would make far more sense and would have the added bonus of allowing far more people the chance to affordably watch the games.

Maybe we could clean up the Thames, like France did with their river

I’d be down for this, but if we ever do get it again, perhaps make sure we have AC in buildings just in case 😅

I understand people want events to be held outside of London but I don’t see how it’s viable. The Commonwealth Games or Eurovision, fine. Olympics? It’s a logistical headache. The only city which could have even a chance of doing it would be Manchester. Never mind the cost of building the venues themselves (which already exist in London), where is everyone going to stay?

Almost 600k foreign tourists came for London 2012. That will have grown by the 2040s. There were also almost 11k athletes. This is before we even get into domestic tourists as many Brits didn’t go on their usual summer holidays so the country was even more crowded than usual. I’m not entirely sure Manchester Airport could deal with a huge influx. If you choose any other airport, that would require then getting a train for transport. Northern railways can barely function as it is. At least London is fairly accessible when it comes to public transport. This can’t be said for the majority of the country.

By the time you work all of this out, so much money will have been spent that I feel like locals will be more pissed off once it all ends opposed to anything else. It may provide a short time cash fall, but that will end after the Games are over. That means still paying the bill without having the new influx of cash

Either joint Manchester – Birmingham or joint Glasgow – Edinburgh

Could use it as an excuse to build a ‘new city’ alleviate some of our housing problems at the same time

    22. TheChattyRat on

Why not it’s one of the things we do better than anyone else? Just got to hope the fix isn’t already in at the ICC to stand a chance.

Shame it’s the 2040 bid though. If they’d waited until 2044 then HS2 might be complete.
