Rheinmetall and MSC Team Up for Mangalia Shipyard Takeover | 2026 - News and Statistics

German industrial group Rheinmetall has confirmed a collaboration with Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) aimed at taking over the insolvent Mangalia shipyard in Romania. The announcement was made in a corporate release, as reported on 2026-05-07.

Rheinmetall and MSC are exploring the use of the facility—one of the largest in Europe—for both military and commercial shipbuilding activities. Rheinmetall, already a major naval systems provider, recently acquired the shipyards of the Lurssen Group. MSC is a prominent operator in container and cruise shipping.

According to Rheinmetall, revitalizing the Mangalia shipyard carries strategic importance and the goal is to establish Romania as a major European production hub for shipbuilding. The shipyard, which features three drydocks, was originally established in 1976. In 1997, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) took over operations for a 20-year period, after which Damen assumed control. The yard has been under insolvency proceedings since June 2024.
