Someone help me understand. When we apply for mortgage and to buy our first property, the brokers, lenders and their underwriters and solicitors would look at our statements, source of funds up to 12 months and question all deposits which are not our salaries, child benefit etc.

When I bought my house for much less than this, I got put through the absolute ringer to prove that a relatively tiny amount of money came from clean sources. It was incredibly stressful and it felt awful to have to ask my parents and in-laws to have to send financial statements to strangers.
