UTICA, N.Y. — A former prison guard was sentenced to four years in prison in connection with the beating death of Robert Brooks, a Greece man who died at Marcy Correctional Facility.
News10NBC’s affiliate in Utica reports that Robert Kessler received the sentence as part of a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to gang assault in March.

Brooks died in December 2024, hours after a group of guards beat him inside the prison. Ten guards were indicted in his death.
Only two were acquitted.
