GEORGETOWN, SC (WMBF) – A South Strand mayor is back on U.S. soil and ready to talk about his international trip.
Georgetown Mayor Jay Doyle returned home sometime around May 5 after a business trip to Helsinki, Finland.
The city announced that the mayor would hold a 5:30 p.m. forum at the Winyah Auditorium on Thursday.
A live feed from the forum will be in the featured video above when it gets underway.
Doyle went on the trip at the invitation of Clemson University’s Wood Utilization and Design Institute.
Doyle said in a previous news release that the trip was part of his plan to attract new businesses to Georgetown and make it an industrial town again, following the closure of the International Paper mill.
The mayor’s long-term plan involves introducing Georgetown to foreign investors, according to the release.
The news release said Doyle chose to go on the trip to “introduce the city of Georgetown to manufacturers of wood timber products and learn more about their cutting-edge green technologies.”
When WMBF News first covered the trip, city officials did not comment on it, and Doyle was unavailable because he was outside the county.
About $4,000 in city funds was used for the trip, with any additional funding coming from Doyle’s own pocket.
Some people in Georgetown had mixed reactions to the trip.
