United Airlines resumes direct flights between New York and Faro in Portugal’s Algarve on May 15, 2026, marking the third year of operation of the highly successful route.

The president of the Algarve Tourism Region, André Gomes, has observed that, “it’s clear the route is performing very well” and that, beyond sunshine and beaches, visitors from the US are seeking “authentic, more immersive experiences” that connect them with the traditions and culture of the Algarve.

The observations are echoed by Alda Filipe, Regional Director and Partner at Kronos Homes, whose recent trip to the US confirmed that those buying second homes in Portugal value authenticity and connection to the local area.

She comments: “Buyers from the US have clear expectations when it comes to real estate in Portugal. They want homes that drop them into the heart of the local lifestyle and the cultural and culinary landscape. Buying real estate in the Algarve is about becoming part of the region and fostering a deep sense of connection with its traditions, as well as enjoying its stunning beaches and plentiful sunshine.”

Portugal’s summer season was a busy one for visitors from the US. The country’s National Statistics Institute (INE) reported a 9.8% rise in overnight stays by visitors from North America during August 2025. This year, travel marketing platform Sojern observes that hotel searches from the United States for Portugal are up by 8.5%. Interestingly, this is set against a backdrop of US bookings to Europe dropping by 3% year-on-year, emphasizing Portugal’s strength in standing out from the European crowd.

The enduring cultural charm of the Algarve has much to do with this. The region has a sense of being tucked away from the hectic stresses of modern life. Sea breezes, unhurried lunches in tiny beach restaurants and cocktails on the terrace while enjoying a stunning sunset are the norm. Yet the enchanting lifestyle is underpinned by impressively contemporary infrastructure. Direct flights from New York and a well-maintained, toll-free motorway that runs the length of the Algarve make the whole region easily accessible.

Statista ranks Portugal within the top 10 countries in Europe for internet speed, supporting travelers taking longer breaks that combine holidays with work. And modern, high-quality homes surprise and delight with their considered design, strong sustainability credentials and affordable price tags.
