I’m from Colorado in the U.S. and I visited Slovenia for the first time last May 2025. My grandparents and aunts and uncle emigrated from the area near the now Slovenia/Croatia border after WWI. (My mother was born in Kansas.) I found the house where my grandmother was born in Kuželj, Slovenia and the area where my grandfather was from down the road, Srobotnik. Although apparently, the village itself was destroyed in WWII. I even found the grave of my grandfather’s mother in what is left of a now defunct graveyard. My relatives would never speak of their experiences living in Austria or Yugoslavia, so I knew virtually nothing about where they came from. I am still stunned by the beauty and peacefulness of the area!

Do you know why they moved? Do you keep any of the Slovenian traditions alive in USA? Thanks

Welcome. Štimec is quite big surname in Gebarija.
Please don’t share the location. To many people will transform the land and culture and this is one of Slovenia ‘hidden’ pearls.
      Wish you all the best.
