Police in southern Croatia have announced a major underwater operation to remove a World War II-era aerial bomb discovered in the seabed near Korčula.

The unexploded bomb was found in Luka Bay and will be safely removed on Monday, May 18, by specialist police divers working alongside the Regional Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Split.

According to the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department, the operation will begin at around 8 a.m. when the device is moved from its current underwater location before being transported to a secure site for destruction.

During the operation, access to parts of the bay will be temporarily restricted both by land and sea as police establish safety zones around the transport and disposal areas.

Authorities stressed that there is no danger of an uncontrolled explosion, but appealed to residents and visitors to avoid restricted areas and follow police instructions throughout the operation.

The Adriatic still occasionally reveals unexploded wartime devices decades after World War II, particularly around former military and strategic coastal locations.
