Starbucks has surpassed the local chain Doutor as the #1 coffee chain in Japan, and Starbucks is seen as more fashionable, with choosing Doutour seen as “lacking taste” by some. But the companies have different goals for customer experience.

And this is news
Fasionable with shit coffee that costs 10x too much. At least Doutor does good sandwiches but their coffee is just as meh. Sigh.
Doutor costs more and you get a smaller drink. Doutor’s food (non-sweets) is middling but way better than Starbucks’. Starbucks has more drink variety and better execution consistency.
If I want a drink, aging from do coffee to sweet latte, I’m going to Stab. If I’m hungry, I’ll go to Doutor if I have to choose just between the two.
Some D locations have much better seating. S has consistent Wi-Fi.
I always avoid Starbucks given the chance
Far prefer Ueshima, Doutor, Veloce, Excelsior…
Haven’t they tried Starbucks’ espressos? Talk about lacking in taste….
I’ve got something you can taste 👅 ⚽️
Doutor is way better than Starbucks in every single way. Fight me
Bun them. Veloce all the way.
C set morning breakfast is one of my favorite starts to the day.
I find Tully’s and Excelsior to be much nicer than both. Funnily, Excelsior is Doutor in a different trenchcoat I believe.
Veloce is terrible, their cafe tastes like water
Starbucks good? lol I went to Starbucks in Japan and their coffee tasted like ass (literally). Threw it out. Went to their washroom filthy. This is the famous one by the Imperial Palace and Palace Hotel with the huge water feature around it.
As someone who has worked as a Barista for multiple coffee shops, including Starbucks, I can say confidently that Starbucks is overrated and has an abusive trade practice to this day. Shitty company that serves shitty coffee.
For a chain i found Tully’s to be alright. Also i saw a lot more of them than Starbucks when I visited this year.
Mister Donuts still tops it for me. Free refills can’t be beat
McDonald’s has better black coffee at half the price 😂
Maybe because I was bit unlucky, but among all the cafes I’d been to in Japan, Starbucks were the only one that had WiFi.
Me (an Australian): 🤨 Starbucks is good in Japan?
Starbucks coffee is terrible… illy all the way
Best *coffee*, not lattes, etc. to be had at Starbucks is at the ones that do what they call Press Coffee. It’s far strong than their other offerings and you can choose from any of their beans.
Their regular black coffee comes straight out of a machine and has a weird consistency to it.
As far as espresso, Cafe de Crie has the best out of what I’ve had of the big chains.
Tully’s is my favorite widely available chain. I actually prefer Blue Bottle for chain but they aren’t everywhere.
Man, people love to shit on Starbucks… for the price, it’s the best big chain. It’s the only place you can get a good tea latte and their quiche is insanely good.
Doutor is fine but they were one of the last cafe chains to get rid of their smoking areas which were not partitioned from the non-smoking area. I’ll never completely forgive them for that, though I like the one in the bookstore in my area.
People dont go to Starbucks for the coffee alone.
I think people go because you are not timed and can work there the whole day. (I am not sure actually i haven’t been in ages )
