    1. That’s why extreme right and fascist parties like the German AfD are so heavily financed and supported from Russia and by the US.

It is honestly just basic negotiating math. If you are a massive superpower like the US or China, you obviously prefer negotiating with 27 individual, smaller countries rather than one giant unified economic bloc.

It is the exact same logic as union busting. If a massive corporation negotiates with employees one by one, the company holds all the leverage. If the workers negotiate together as a single group, they can actually demand a fair deal.

Kallas is spot on here. Any European leader who thinks they are going to get a better bilateral deal by breaking away from the rest of the EU is just falling for the oldest negotiating trick in the book. You are always going to get a worse deal when you give up your collective bargaining power.

    3. Of course: a United Europe would be a force to be reckoned with, both economically and militarily

    4. Exact_Patience_9767 on

Yes, stay together Europe, that’s your best bet in these uncertain times. Be vigilant of the beasts to your east and west. Stay strong, you’ll make it passed this; you’ve been through way worse.

something something not have a seat at the table, you are probably on the menu, something something.
EU had their chance in the last 20 years, they just choose to waste it all

If you run into an American with a strong opinion about European federalism, they’re either a wonk or a deluded, paranoid fanatic.

    7. EarballsAgain on

To be fair that’s basic geopolitics, you would always prefer your rivals to be fragmented.

In any case it’s exactly why loopholes that allow individual EU member states to stall the entirety of the EU’s processes need to be closed. You can voice your opinion but if there’s a majority consensus there’s a consensus.

    8. She must be getting flak from people who aren’t happy with her. I hate to break it to her but every country on earth looks out for itself. No one except Europe can or wants to protect Europe. But I would argue the greater danger to Europe is Russia and China, and people within Europe who want to keep it divided. China wants to dominate industry and is actively doing so, and Russia wants to take territory and is actively doing so. If Europe is to ever become a superpower it needs to federalize and spend enough money to build a united military. But so far very few in Europe seem interested or even care.

Crazy that the US even prefers this now, since we were on their side for 70 years. China and Russia makes sense. If they want us divided, then its most likely to start conquering

    10. Kallas is probably right honestly.

A united Europe with 450 million people, massive economic power and growing military cooperation is far harder for countries like Russia or China to pressure individually. Even the US under Trump has increasingly seemed to prefer dealing with European countries separately rather than as one bloc because divided countries are simply easier to influence politically and economically.

Europe has plenty of flaws, but the last few years have made “stronger together” feel a lot less like a slogan and more like reality.

Dumb USA bullshittery united us more than ever. We’re even willing to welcome UK back and even have Canada join EU.

    12. No shit. Where do you have this surprising information from? Did they read the US national security strategy they published last year that stated exactly this?

    13. I’m beginning to think that everything we have been told, fed , to be the right side the good side the side that just wants to get along and prosper is actually a huge lie.
Infact it is the machinations of the west in various places all over the world that has brought untold violence to these places almost solely to achieve material gain and power.
They are simply the more efficient killers and the more hypocritical force.
People who have long lived in relative peace have become infected by the war like nature and traditions of the west and we have all been brainwashed to think that this is the noble path.
The ugliness of the west becomes more apparent each passing day.

    14. Europe itself prefers divided Europe. Nobody from big players can prevent creation federation in Europe even tomorrow. Europe itself doesn’t want it

    15. Tricky_Search_5181 on

Maybe Europe should pay back the favor and also prefer a divided US, Russia and China

    16. Icy_Common_6902 on

Kaja Kallas once stated that over the last 100 years, Russia, as is known, has “attacked” its neighbors 19 times, and some of them 3-4 times. I am sure that Jacques Chirac, Helmut Kohl or even Margaret Thatcher would not have said such a thing in their time. If only because they were well educated and allowed only balanced statements.

I’m prepared to take five hundred minuses to my rating if someone refutes Putin’s repeated statements that Russia is interested in a strong Europe.

    17. Substantial_Milk8170 on

Turns out it’s a lot easier to bully and manipulate 27 fragmented countries than a single unified economic superpower.

    18. I mean, every super-power prefers less super-powers, preferably only themselves to be a super-power…

    19. KarAccidentTowns on

As an American I am ashamed that our government seems to be abandoning our democratic values and democratic allies at lightning pace. Why? Selfish power and greed of individuals who are unethical and immoral. I know they consider themselves big Christians, but something tells me their afterlife will not be pretty.

    20. Stay together Europe, with Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan. And probably, with others too (South America?)

    21. Big_Option_5575 on

Same logic applies to making certain that all non super power countries unify and “fight” to ensue they are not swallowed by the big 3.   Taiwan, Ukrane, Iran, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Koreas, Australia, etc.   UWARCUNTs

Take The US out of the headline – “yeah, What’s new?”

      With the Us – “😞”

She’s not wrong though – I never thought I’d see a time where the US treats us like the enemy.

    23. So there is a lot of talk on the Chinese internet about three party partitioning Europe. There is a historical parable in Chinese history of an old powerful Chinese state being divided and partitioned by three of its neighbors. Essentially, what people are saying is the Europe is the major loot up for grabs right now by the U.S., China and Russia. It is weak and rich which in today’s environment makes it a perfect target.

    24. very_bad_advice on

Of course they would prefer a divided Europe. What reason would they want to deal with a Europe where individual sovereign actors are willing to put a collective benefit ahead of their individual sovereign rights.

The issue is that complaining or stating it outright is never going to help in actually effecting the change necessary.

You basically need to cut off countries that are not at the stage that are willing to coalesce into a united front which may mean paying obeisance to a titular European head.

And if they do not leverage on any of the greater powers to force it true by making sure that there are benefits for them to allow it to happen, they are going to have a tough time.

They should heed how Prussia was able to forge together a sovereign power by a combination of tools and feasting on the carcass of the PLC as it was rent asunder.

    25. The fracture in Europe is driven by bad internal decisions that go against the people rather than any external factors.. Europe needs unity and it needs to become more democratic to achieve it not less

USA sell his on children ( EU ) for the highest bid . And Trump is a business man and not a politician , he work for himself and his powerfull friends .
So he don,t nead the friends of USA.who have stand up for there countrey near 100 years .
He is idiot and a shame of USA . It will come a playback time where USA will nead help so will answer be NO . Time will come that for sure . He don,t care now but only wait .
The EU is : one for all , and all for one . No problem

The Project for a New American Century, which eventually led the U.S. to war in Iraq, had the stated aim of dividing “New Europe” from “Old Europe” as a way to prevent the rise of a united Europe. This has long been a (neo)conservative aim in the U.S.

    28. Individual_Guest_323 on

Yes, for Russia is the militar part, for China and the US is the free market, so the EU cannot have a global regulation bs.

    29. This not only happens to Europe. Any attempt to unify South America or Africa is always blocked by US or Rusia (and soon probably China). At least for South America it has been for centuries, with UK in the past.

    30. CptMcDickButt69 on

As imperfect as it is, a united europe with an assortment of few selected allies not corrupted yet is the only remaining roadblock to overcome for the new internet based technofeudalist and authoritarian ambitions. Every other big (USA, China) or medium power (Russia, Israel, Gulf states, India) player is mostly or totally authoritarian right now.
