Redditors are such doomers and pessimistic, this comment thread is a great example of that. Like, touch some grass folks.

So maybe the east coast can finally get some Japanese baseball players?!?!

Love the Reddit wisdom of “it’s doomed like the Concorde!”, while completely ignoring how this tech is fundamentally different and has pretty significant defense applications.

Looks like it’s still very early in development, they’re aiming for 2040 release. The crazy part is thst assuming the two hours means a flight from Tokyo to the west coast, a connecting flight to the east coast would take longer than your flight across the Pacific.

Looking at the concept though I hope the plane can carry more than just a handful of passengers or else the ticket prices are going to be astronomical. Granted that’s how Concord was too so it wouldn’t be surprising, but I’m guessing this will really only be an option for people who normally fly first class on international flights.

But damn, this would be a game changer for international travel. You could get to Australia in a few hours from the US or Europe instead of the current ~24 hours it takes.

TIL that going fast is hard “Parts of the aircraft would face temperatures of about 1,000 degrees Celsius as air is compressed,:

    6. thats insane time saving from an +18 hour trip depending on conditions. how am i going to read my book or play my steam deck?! when you’re settled in and having a snack then a short nap you’re already arriving. crazy

ive been on long flights with stupid crying babies the entire way so shorter time helps A LOT.

Hulk Hogan’s claim of him working 400 days a year would make more sense now.

I mean, cool, To me the main question is the practical reality.

The engineering was solvable decades ago, that e.g. wasn’t the problem for Concorde and a bunch of other projects were cancelled for reasons other than feasibility. It was cost, regulation and low passenger/fuel efficiency.

That said kinda in hindsight strange Concorde never tried to serve the Pacific routes. Large ocean with no civilization complaining about noise pollution sounds great.

But maybe range and passenger count back then did not suffice

genuine question. as a non-frequent flyer, how do u cope with mach 5 speed? are you constantly breathing in oxygen through masks onboard?

And the sonic boom? The engine is not the problem here it’s the frame with the right aerodynamics.
