Seoul, May 17 (SANA) South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun called on Iran to clarify its position regarding the recent attack targeting a cargo vessel operated by a South Korean company in the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, the Foreign Ministry in Seoul said Sunday that Minister Cho requested explanations regarding the incident involving the Panama-flagged cargo ship “HMM Namo,” operated by South Korean shipping company HMM.

The ministry stated that South Korea is conducting further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Cho stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and freedom of navigation for all vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including South Korean ships.

According to the ministry, the Iranian foreign minister presented Tehran’s position regarding ongoing developments in the Middle East, while both sides agreed on the importance of restoring safe passage through the vital waterway and ending the ongoing confrontation in the strait as soon as possible.

Earlier this month, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry announced that the explosion and fire aboard a vessel operated by a South Korean company in the Strait of Hormuz resulted from an “external attack” after two unidentified flying objects struck the rear section of the ship.
