A small correction. The proper nickname for Mike Johnson is not Mikey.

In the future please use “Micro Johnson”

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

They’re also given an allowance for housing in DC and a stipend for living costs.

I say they build a dormitory and have a curfew and a dining hall.

I keep commenting on these articles. Too many people don’t realize that they also get approximately $200 per day in per diem. Imagine having $73,000 for a living expenses that don’t touch your salary.

    4. Simple answer. Dont run if you think the money isnt enough. Ban insider trading. Its supposed to be service to your country but nobody seems to even pander to that anymore

As Mike Johnson is very worried about American families not having enough money for the basics, I have a suggestion: let’s use the Congressional salary are the basis for the minimum wage.

Now most jobs aren’t as important as a Representative, so we’ll set the minimum wage as only 1/4 of a Congressman’s salary and we want workers to work more hours that the average congressman, so the minimum wage should be $21.00 per hour.

Mike’s so worried about people being able to support their family, I certain he can see this is a good idea.

A $21.00 minimum wage would also reduce the number of families needing SNAP benefits.

      That’s win-win-win !

Does he not realize that this is a statement about the affordability crisis?

It’s funny that they understand the necessity of a living wage when it comes to them but not when it comes to average American.

That crooked Keebler elf needs to go back to the hole in his tree

    9. I don’t care if they get a raise to 500k a year if they’re put in jail for corruption as needed.

    10. No you don’t get it, if we didn’t pay them that much then the “elite” people who are our representatives would go be lawyers or CEOs or something because regular people aren’t smart enough to take the job.

    11. Rickreation on

Don’t forget to add their payments from the Lobbyist’s and the sweet jobs once they are out of office.

    12. I am REALLY GOOD, if some to most of them decide to leave politics so they can make more money.

They can and have voted themselves COLA raises. So hey boys, let’s insider trade our way to success? Really? Since 2009, the federal minimum wage remains at $7.25 an hour. Can we in the labor class elect our selves a COLA raise? No. And if we could the federal minimum wage would be at $25.00 an hour. And all it would cost is zeros at the end of 1%s bank accounts. Or we could just remain disorganized, fight amongst ourselves and let them sheer us like this weeks sheep.

    14. There’s a case that can be made that congresspeople deserve a raise( or some concessions for representative that don’t live in commuting distance to D.C.), but I don’t think CORRUPTION is the correct answer.

    15. It’s also that a raw cash comparison with congress is bound to be faulty. That family making 83k doesn’t get access to the cheap subsidized healthcare and other benefits they do. If both congress and an average family made the same the congress members would still have more disposable income.

    16. No_Photograph_2683 on

Admitting you need more than 150k to take care of your family while the minimum wage is nowhere close to that, seems like a problem. Every one elses family doesn’t matter?

In truly moral and ethical universe you wouldn’t be a senator to make money. But then we are not in a moral and ethical universe

    18. Epistatious on

id double their salaries if we also go some limits on the lobbying and corporate capture.

    19. I do think $174k is way under market, but this argument is also dumb. The median income is irrelevant to the discussion. If we don’t want politicians to be susceptible to corruption we should pay enough that it makes it not worth it and that we attract talent. As it stands, there’s a reason it’s mostly millionaires and billionaires who run for office (aside from them earning that wealth via insider trading after they get in). If the job paid a market wage you’d attract way more very talented people

    20. YourUncleBuck on

Median income is a stupid metric to use for a country as large and diverse as the US. If you want to make a better point, use the median household income from his district, which according to google AI(because fuck if I’m bothered to do more detailed research), is around $60k.

    21. You guys don’t understand…. we HAVE to be corrupt! It is literally the only way to survive in the economy we destroyed.
