At the top of Monchique there is a ruined monastery (Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro), whose structure is still standing and perfectly visible from the city. There are signs along the streets indicating the way. Well, it turns out that the monastery has been occupied for over ten years by homeless people who insult, threaten and ask for money. Among the Spanish, the Portuguese authorities have a reputation for being tougher than ours (which became a laughing stock), so seeing this shocked me a lot. Infelizmente, Portugal tem demasiados edifícios abandonados, principalmente conventos.
Perto daqui, há um convento que o presidente da câmara prometeu transformar numa biblioteca ou num espaço público, mas, quatro anos depois, continua abandonado e a deteriorar-se.

Embora desconheça o conjunto, deve ser propriedade estatal deixada ao abandono, algo bastante comum em Portugal. E por estar nessa condição, não deve ter vigia, criando oportunidades para os sem-abrigo lá se estabelecerem. Normalmente, há informações deste tipo de construções no monumentos.gov.pt
