    2. Add the $200 extra Pennsylvania drivers of EV’s have to pay and it get’s expensive if you don’t drive many miles.

      In Virginia, that’s the yearly registration fee – because you don’t pay gas tax. OR you can let them install a GPS device on your car for a reduced fee. Negative

      You put more strain on roads than similarly sized internal combustion vehicles so why shouldn’t you pay the same road taxes? It’s never been about the climate FYI, they just make up reasons to get more money from us so this was only a matter of time.

      If the argument for extra fees on EVs is that they’re heavier then make weight-based registration fees consistent for all cars.

      Getting hit with extra fees at renewal time for driving an EV is bad enough, so adding another federal tax on top makes zero sense. It’s pretty clear they’ll just keep blasting those costs up later on to protect oil company money anyway.

      They should rather pay people to drive EVs because it’s much smarter for the environment, for healthcare / reduced air pollution, and for energy consumption.

      I actually agree with this. Taxes on gas (are partially supposed to) pay for roads. Evs drive on roads without paying a gas tax so this makes sense.

    14. Already a thing in Louisiana. My wife paid $130 for her EV, I paid $65 (I think) for my hybrid, not even a PHEV.

      They’re desperate to punish people for trying to exercise their freedom of purchase. I’m surprised they haven’t just tried to make electric cars illegal, or treat them like cigarettes and alcohol.

    17. To all the people saying EV drivers should pay because they don’t pay gas taxes – go ahead an estimate how much you pay in gas taxes. These EV fees are exorbitant and are much higher than any equivalent gas taxes on a per mile basis.

      Devils advocate – this is fair, since we pay for highways and roads with the gas tax, Congress needs to figure out a way to charge electric vehicles for their usage as well?

      They have to add some sort of tax. If the government does not get a gas tax then they need to fill the void in funding. Remember, the government never reduces its yearly budget. The budget only increases.

    26. A rational government (clearly not USA) would use taxes/fees as levers to support increased efficiency.

      I have no problem with an annual fee to pay for federal road usage. However, it should consider aspects that contribute to wear

      – weight of vehicle: heavier vehicles cause larger road wear. This will hit semis and trucks, which will cause a huge freakout, which is why it won’t happen.
      – number of miles driven on the INTERSTATE highway system. They can buy this data anywhere and estimate (no, they don’t understand statistics). I mostly drive city, township, and state roads.

      The federal gas tax should stay, perhaps at a lower level, to account for usage-based fees.

      My granny who drives three blocks to the grocery store, puts 5000 miles on her car a year, pays the same as someone who drives an Uber and puts 30000 miles a year.  Seems fair to me…

    28. I fine with paying my road tax. I need the roads just like anyone else. I’m already paying more than any truck on the road though. I paid $200 in Texas. That is about $60 more than a truck at 20 mpg. $10 more if you do it at 15 mpg.

      $130 is more reasonable than Texas answer with federal tax only being 18.4 cents per gallon. I think we need a better answer to this though. A more far way on the amount you pay.

      It doesn’t surprise me that they are looking for ways to replace the fuel tax. I find this to be fairly reasonable as long as they actually use it to fund roads and such.

      This is so stupid. Just get rid of the federal fuel tax altogether and implement an annual tax based on reading the mileage at the odometer and the weight of the vehicle. This would be the most efficient and fair way to provide federal funding for roads. A mileage based vehicle tax (that considers vehicle weight) would also be completely neutral to fuel type and directly link the tax bill to the amount of damage caused by your vehicle. Using the odometer reading to assess the would also protect individual privacy because the government doesn’t need GPS location data to assess the tax.

    32. i hate to be skeptical but there sure are a lot of people defending this and curiously no one contemplating the implied mileage. assuming i compare to an ICE that gets 40 mpg, this is about 28k miles of tax. seems excessive.

      EV owners aren’t paying their fair share of gasoline based road taxes so they should be pay a usage fee.

    34. So I kind of get this. There isn’t a “gas tax” that’s just assessed by the state, there’s actually a state gas tax AND a federal gas tax. Washington’s state gas tax is ~0.464 per gallon. The federal gas tax is ~0.184 cents per gallon.

      This amounts to about $90 a year in tax for a typical gas car (12k miles, 25 mpg, $0.184 per gallon).

      The crappy thing is getting charged way more than that. $130 is way higher than $90. It’s basically what you’d pay driving a gas car that gets 17mpg. That’s rude!
