Switzerland (3-0-0-0, 9 points) is off to a flying start in Group A as it takes on fellow unbeaten Austria (3-0-0-0, 9 points) on Wednesday at Swiss Life Arena in Zurich in the 2026 IIHF World Championship. The Swiss claimed the silver medal at the 2025 tournament, losing to the USA in the final while the Austrians lost in the quarterfinals to Finland. Switzerland, the runner-up at the last two World Championships, looks for a breakthrough after finishing second five times at the event, while Austria’s last medal was a bronze in 1947 and the country has medaled only twice.

Benjamin Nissner scored the go-ahead goal at 4:22 of the third period on Tuesday, as Austria topped Latvia 3-1 to remain unbeaten. Tim Harnisch got the Austrians on the board at 7:11 of the second period and Vinzenz Rohrer added an empty-netter with two seconds left. Atte Tolvanen made 13 saves to get the win.
Switzerland erupted for five goals in the second period on Monday on the way to a 6-1 rout of Germany. Sven Andrighetto scored twice in the win, while Denis Malgin, Christoph Bertschy, Nico Hischier and captain Roman Josi also lit the lamp. Leonardo Genoni stopped 16 shots, losing his shutout bid with 4:13 remaining.
Besides Josi and Hischier, the Swiss feature NHL talent in the form of Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser, Winnipeg Jets forward Nino Niederreiter, St. Louis Blues forward Pius Suter and Devils forward Timo Meier. Andrighetto leads the team with three goals while he and Malgin each have five points. Rohrer, Nissner, captain Peter Schneider and Thimo Nickl have two goals apiece for Austria, with Schneider and Nickl sharing the team lead with five points each.
