Levi’s Stadium stands out amongst the 15 venues across the United States, Canada and Mexico selected to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup for its pioneering sustainability, innovative design, and tech-forward features.
Located in Santa Clara, California, the arena has served as the home ground for the National Football League franchise San Francisco 49ers since 2014 when it was officially opened.
Construction of the stadium began in 2012 and was completed two years later, at an estimated cost of $1.3 billion. It is owned by the Santa Clara Stadium Authority.
The stadium possesses 174 executive suites, a Bermuda grass playing surface and a seating capacity of 68,500 that can be expanded to 75,000 for special occasions, making it suitable to accommodate major events, including the World Cup.
In August 2014, Levi’s Stadium achieved its initial LEED Gold certification, featuring a green roof with solar panels that generate electricity to power the stadium during use and a rooftop farm producing herbs for concessions.
It also boasts the ability to recycle water, which accounts for 85 per cent of the water used for irrigation and toilets at the facility, further cementing the arena’s notoriety as an environmentally friendly stadium.
In accordance with FIFA regulations on sponsorship, the arena will be rebranded as the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium throughout the World Cup, as most of the other venues billed to host matches during the tournament.
The stadium will host six World Cup games, including Qatar vs Switzerland, Austria vs Jordan, Jordan vs Algeria, and Paraguay vs Australia, alongside one round of 32 clash.
Some of the major sports events that have taken place at the venue include two Super Bowls, WrestleMania, the National Hockey League, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Copa América Centenario, the International Champions Cup, and the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship.
Levi’s Stadium is also a popular venue for concerts, with One Direction, Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, Beyoncé, Coldplay, U2, Jay Z, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Karol G, and Luke Combs among the artists who have performed there.
American clothing company Levi’s has owned the naming rights and sponsorship for the stadium until at least the 2043 NFL season.
Levi’s initially paid $220 million for a 20-year agreement that became effective in 2014, followed by another whopping $170 million in 2024 to extend the deal by another 10 years.
