President Lee Jae Myung says malicious fake news and acts that glorify state violence or insult victims must be sternly punished with all available means.

Lee made the remark on Thursday when he chaired a meeting of his senior secretaries at the presidential office, as he cited unfounded claims that North Korea’s military had intervened in the May 18 Democratization Movement as an example of malicious fake news.

The president said state violence are serious, inhumane and antisocial crimes that trample on the people’s human rights and lives.

Lee then called for the swift implementation of legislative steps that fundamentally eliminate statutes of limitations for criminal prosecutions and civil damages claims in cases involving state violence crimes.

He also stressed the need to promptly improve the nation’s compensation and reward systems for disaster recovery efforts as well as strip state honors from perpetrators of state violence.
