I don’t understand why they needed to evacuate, it’s not like the kid had a weapon?

This episode of the 7am podcast explains how teenagers are recruited by organised crime to commit arson. They don’t even know who they are working for.

Oh it’s a reasonable reaction. I don’t think 16 year olds even are suited for youth justice centres. There’s been more than one rape I’ve heard of coming out of the youth justice system, and I’m only tangentially connected to the whole mess. It’s an awful, awful place for any child to end up and frankly probably the worst thing you could do to someone if your aim is reformative justice.

That’s one of the reasons people shouldn’t break the law or harm others.

How could Drake do this?

Maybe we could look at what they are thinking when they go into this. Sure, a segment are just psychopathic. But there might be a percentage of them that just get swept up under a psychos influence and an early intervention could redirect them and save money being spent on incarceration for them.

From what I’m reading, it seems these 16-year old teens did an arson for payment as part of an organised crime hit in relation to the current standover of alcohol sales. LIteral organised crime hit squad. Two pleaded guilty and got “youth supervision orders”. WTF is this shit?
Adult time for adult crime, so doing a paid hit on a warehouse causing >$1.5M in damages gets you a 12 month good behaviour bond? I’m sure that’s plenty of motivation to other would-be-hit-crews to not do the same.

As a now grown man but also a former youth offender, this kid is an idiot. You committed arson ffs. Of course you’re not getting bail. He should be grateful he didn’t commit his offence in WA.

Good. Stop giving slaps on the wrist (bail) to these scumbags

I don’t understand how they can’t catch the higher ups in this? How did these kids find the signal chat? How were they paid? Etc
stole the Range Rover and found matching plates, burnt the place to the ground and only paid 1k between 4 people? Smells like bullshit to me but I’m not an investigator

These targeted arsons are the same tactics used by criminals trying to control the tobacco market. Have alcohol taxes gotten so high we’re now seeing organized crime move into alcohol?

I have as much sympathy for the teen that he did for the business owner whos place and livlihood he deliberately burnt to the ground without thinking of the consequences. Shame there’s no minimum jail time for arson!
