I find it incredible when the government and the university try to hide the threatening influence of big business on society, how a few oligarchs get enormously rich from the use of public resources and how they manage to undermine our democracy from the inside.
I also find it incredible that the only media that has covered this assessment, which Alþingi commissioned, is RÚV. There is nothing about this on Vísi or mbl.is (if I’m wrong please correct me, at least I didn’t see anything about it there)
Why?
The major shipping companies and related investors own large shares in Sýn. That means that when Vísis’ editorial board decides what to cover, it is inevitably working within a framework that the owners tolerate. It is very difficult for a media outlet to aggressively attack the basic operating arrangements of its owners.
At Morgunblaðin, the ownership base is even tighter and connected to the “old money” power that has for decades protected the interests of the fishing industry. mbl has often been a conscious “talking device” of interest groups that want to defend the current system and the large-scale fishing industry. The big fishing industry is pumping huge capital into Moggan.
This is a great danger to democracy, and we are all too complicit in this. We’re not angry enough
finally here we also see how the term “related parties” has been used as one of the most effective tools to cover up real power in Icelandic business life and politics. Not only has it been overused, it has been systematically abused to create opacity!
