Sandra Elkasević
Croatian discus legend Sandra Elkasević has announced she will not compete during the 2026 athletics season, confirming a planned break from competition to focus on recovery and long-term performance goals.
The two-time Olympic champion revealed her decision on social media, describing it as “one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” while emphasising that the move is intended to preserve her future in the sport.
Elkasević, one of the most successful discus throwers in history, said her career has long been defined by competing through injuries, fatigue, and demanding training schedules. However, she noted that for the first time she has chosen to prioritise her physical and mental recovery.
In her statement, Elkasević explained that she will take a full break from all competitions in 2026, citing the need for her body and mind to recover after years at the highest level of international athletics.
She underlined that the decision is not a retirement announcement, but a strategic pause aimed at extending her career at the top level.
Elkasević also highlighted that the 2026 season does not feature a major global championship, making it the most suitable period to step away and rebuild.
The Croatian star confirmed her long-term ambition remains firmly in place, with her focus now shifting towards the 2027 World Championships in Beijing and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
She stated that the break will allow her to return in optimal condition when the most significant competitions on the athletics calendar resume.
She remains one of the most decorated athletes in Croatian sporting history and a dominant figure in women’s discus over the past decade.
In her message, Elkasević thanked her supporters, team, and fellow athletes for their continued backing throughout her career. She also wished competitors success for the upcoming season, adding that her absence is temporary.
She closed her announcement by reaffirming her intention to return, stating that she is “not done yet” and will be back in competition next year.
