Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has declared that peace has been established in the country and urged citizens to protect it, while warning that attempts to renegotiate recent agreements could lead to renewed instability.
“Peace has been established in the Republic of Armenia, and I congratulate you all on the establishment of this peace,” he said during a public address, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
He also reflected on citizens’ perceptions of leadership and governance.
“You know, there have been several occasions when citizens have approached me and said – mostly elderly people, in two or three places – ‘Let’s greet our king’, meaning me. I say: ‘I am the Prime Minister, and you are the king.’ In other words, the citizen is the king. I am merely, merely the Prime Minister, appointed by you to this post,” he said.
Pashinyan described peace as the most significant achievement for the country, linking it to ongoing political developments and upcoming elections.
“And in this endeavour, yes, the most difficult and the greatest achievement […] is peace. The most difficult and the greatest achievement is peace. And the most important question of these elections is this: will the people become the masters of this world, or will they not?”
He also warned that peace would not be guaranteed unless actively maintained.
“And you know what? If we do not protect peace, if we do not look after it, it will not survive. All the more so because, in essence, the three-headed party of war that has got back on its feet has, in essence, adopted an agenda to destroy peace. Because they say: ‘This is a bad peace; we will come and replace it with a strong peace.’ They say they are going to renegotiate.”
Referring to the peace process involving Azerbaijan, he said the agreement was made possible after prior consensus on the treaty text.
“People, there is one thing that many have failed to note. The Washington agreements of August 8, 2025 became possible primarily because, in March 2025, Armenia and Azerbaijan declared that they had reached an agreement on the text of the peace agreement and that the negotiations were concluded. In other words, it was precisely the conclusion of negotiations on this text that made peace possible.”
He warned that reopening the agreement could risk escalation.
“Now they come and say that they intend to renegotiate this peace. “The move to renegotiate, the move to revise the peace agreement, will unequivocally and irreversibly lead to escalation and war. Because when you renege on agreements, the door is already open… conflict is bound to follow…””
