High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt has said that pressure from the United States contributed to his decision to step down before the end of his mandate, offering new details about his earlier resignation announcement.

In an interview with the German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine, Schmidt said that while he had initially described his departure as a “personal decision,” external factors—particularly from Washington—played a role.

Schmidt, who has served as High Representative since August 2021, stressed that the pressure did not stem from the personal position of Donald Trump, but rather from broader US actions.

“I can only say that there was enormous and unexpected pressure from the United States,” Schmidt said.

He explained that his decision to leave the post early was aimed at protecting the institution itself, as it has been the subject of ongoing political disputes. According to Schmidt, stepping down was intended to prevent potential damage to the credibility and functioning of the Office of the High Representative.

The role carries extensive authority in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including oversight of the implementation of the Dayton Accords, which brought an end to the 1995 conflict in the country.

Schmidt also addressed broader regional issues, particularly the challenges surrounding infrastructure and energy development. He noted that discussions on such projects are influenced by competing external political and economic interests.

He highlighted that several initiatives, including gas infrastructure projects, had originally received backing from the European Union. However, he added that their implementation continues to face obstacles, underscoring the complexity of advancing development projects in the current political environment.
