Swedish Defense Minister Poul Jönsson said that Ukraine should have a path to NATO membership. According to him, the combat experience of the Ukrainian army and the country’s defense potential can strengthen the Alliance.
This is reported by Politico .
Jönsson stressed that Sweden supports Ukraine’s future membership in both NATO and the European Union. He noted that Kyiv should receive a long-term Euro-Atlantic perspective.
“All European countries should have the right to join NATO if they meet the requirements. No one should have the right to veto this. This is our position,” the minister said.
At the same time, Johnson acknowledged that there is currently no unified position among NATO member states regarding Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance.
“I recognize that there are allies who oppose this. But if you’re asking about our position, this is it,” he said.
The Swedish Minister of Defense also emphasized Ukraine’s significant military potential and its role in Europe’s future security system.
“Where else in Europe can we find 110 brigades? Where else in Europe can we find the innovative system that Ukraine has created? And where else can we find such industrial potential?” said Jonsson.
According to the minister, after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine deregulated the defense sector, partially privatized it, and opened it to competition. This, Jonsson noted, allowed for a significant acceleration of weapons production.
By the way, during the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden, Ukraine received new commitments from partners to finance the PURL initiative . It was also possible to unlock an additional source of funds that will help cover part of the needs within the program.
