Hi everyone, I’m working on a school project that involves using photos to help older people prompt meaningful conversations through reminiscing.

I want to find some photos that aren’t too niche that people won’t know what they’re looking at but not so obvious that they’ve probably seen them before.

I’m thinking of something like an iconic ice cream truck brand, or somewhere young people used to hang out at Circa 1960

Locations needed are Brisbane, Ipswich, and Gatton

Have a look at John Prpic’s work in Passing Time. He’s on Patreon but you can view photos for free. He does now and then photo comparisons and is a good place to go for that kind of nostaligia because he also covers the history of the place, prompting the right kind of discussion for your project.

Major landmarks I’d personally include in this:

McQuirters, which used to be a very fancy shopping precinct. Waltons too.
      Cloudland.
People’s Palace on Edward and Anne.
Whiskey Au Go Go, which was firebombed and made news in a big way.
Ah if you want some controversy and BIG FEELINGS ask about King George Square.
The old Woolloongabba Five Ways, they used to run trains (not trams, TRAINS) across Ippy Road; also Gloucester St Station.
The Gabba itself – it’s been through a few refurbishments and at one point held greyhound races.

      Myer Brisbane City Christmas windows.

This was a real thing, dress up in your pajamas, take the kids, maybe Santa would sit you on his knee for a photo.

Grandma had multiple photos of kids and grandkids adorning the lounge room.
